Refugees use train carriage to smash police barricade on Greece-Macedonia border (VIDEO) — RT News

Thank God these are peaceful people 😉

As tensions at the Greek-Macedonian border continue to mount, a group of refugees has hijacked a train carriage at Idomeni station and attempted to use it to break through the police barricade.

Several hundred refugees pushed the wagon towards the border with their bare hands, having filled the carriage with rocks intended to be used as weapons against the police.

They were stopped by the Greek police, who eventually managed to persuade the crowd to move the train carriage to its original position.

Members of the group told RT’s Ruptly video agency that the seizing of the wagon was retaliation for brutal behavior by police guarding the border.

„Yesterday they oppressed us, hit us with tear gas, rubber bullets, five caliber. They detained 10 of our friends, took them, beat them up, they even broke some bones,“ a young man, who covered his face with a bandana, said.

That escalated quickly: Iceland appoints new PM, plans snap elections as Pirate Party’s ratings soar — RT News

The Icelandic center-right coalition appointed Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson, the deputy chairman of disgraced PM Gunlaugsson’s Progressive Party, as the country’s new prime minister and scheduled early elections for autumn in the wake of Panama Papers leaks.

Following consultations between the Progressive and Independence parties, which currently form Iceland’s coalition government, Sigurdur Ingi Johannsson was announced as the country’s new PM, replacing Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson. Gunnlaugsson was forced to resign amid mass public protests held earlier on Tuesday which were called after leaks from the “Panama Papers” suggested that he owned an offshore firm.

“We expect to have elections this autumn,” Johannsson told reporters on Wednesday. The elections were originally set to take place in April of 2017.

Despite increased public pressure and calls for the government to be immediate dissolved, the new PM said that his government is going to proceed with its duties up to the new elections.

“We will continue our work together. We are of course hoping this will help bring stability in the political system,” Johannsson stressed. In order to officially assume his new office, he must now receive formal approval from the country’s president, Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson. The decision is due to be taken on Thursday.

In the meantime, the left-wing opposition stressed that it would not give up on its attempts to force a no-confidence vote on the government, which has, in their view, irrevocably discredited itself.

“There is a consensus between the opposition parties that we will push the vote of no-confidence,” said Birgitta Jonsdottir, the leader of the libertarian Pirate Party, adding that with only “26 percent” of Icelanders trusting the ruling government, there is no point in keeping it.

Her party, which took only three out of 63 seats in the 2013 parliamentary elections after passing a 5 percent threshold by only 0.1 percent, is now riding high in the polls.

A opinion survey published by several Icelandic media outlets puts the Pirate Party’s public support at a staggering 43 percent, while the PM’s Progressive Party is said to command only 7.9 percent, a far cry from the 24 percent it received in the previous election. The Independence Party also trails the ‘pirates,’ attracting support from only 21.6 percent of the electorate.

According to a Gallup poll conducted ahead of the Gunnlaugsson’s removal, a whopping 81 percent Icelanders wanted the PM to resign.

Gunnlaugsson’s resignation on Tuesday was triggered by revelations indicating that he and his wife had set up an offshore company based in the British Virgin Islands to avoid paying taxes in Iceland.

Although the ex-PM adamantly denied that he or his wife had violated Icelandic law or were complicit in tax fraud, he eventually stepped down for an “unspecified amount of time,” according to a press release issued on Tuesday.

Icelanders outraged by the allegations and Gunlaugsson’s handling of the scandal have rallied in front of the National Assembly three days in a row, demanding immediate elections.

ISIS video suggests future terror attacks will target London, Berlin, Rome — RT News

Quote start —

Islamic State has released a video suggesting it may carry out further attacks in the West, mentioning London, Berlin, and Rome as possible targets.

The video features a member of the group stating in English that the recent attacks in Paris and Brussels should be seen as a “cautionary message” to nations fighting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

The narrator goes on to state that “Allah knows” where the next attack will be, and mentions the British, Italian, and German capitals as possibilities.

The footage shows a simulation of the Eiffel Tower collapsing, which appears to be from the video game ‚Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.‘ It goes on to show the British Parliament building and the Roman Colosseum.

The propaganda film was released on Monday by a group called Al Wa’ad Media Production, which appears to have been created by IS supporters.

It comes less than three months after the terror group released a separate video which threatened EU heads of state for their countries‘ actions in the Middle East.

The United Kingdom is part of the US-led coalition against IS, which continues to strike terror camps in Iraq and Syria. Although Germany and Italy are not part of the airstrikes, Berlin has supplied military personnel and reconnaissance jets to be used in the fight against IS. In response to the Paris terror attacks in November, Rome vowed to spend €1 billion (about US$1.1 billion) on security and defense, and an additional €1 billion on “culture,” which Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi claimed was “stronger than ignorance.”

US deploys F-15s to Iceland, Netherlands — RT News

War games next part …

Quote start —

The US has deployed 12 F-15C Eagles and around 350 airmen in Europe as part of Operation Atlantic Resolve (OAR), the Pentagon’s demonstration of force designed to deter what the US calls Russian aggression against Europe.

The aircraft and troops were sent from the Barnes Air National Guard Base in Massachusetts and the Fresno Air National Guard Base in California for a six-month tour to Iceland’s Keflavik and the Dutch Leeuwarden Air Base.

The American fighters “will conduct training alongside NATO allies and partners as part of OAR to strengthen interoperability, demonstrate US commitment to a Europe that is whole, free, at peace, secure, and prosperous and to deter further Russian aggression,” the USAF said in a statement.

During the tour the aircraft will forward-deploy to the Eastern European nations of Bulgaria, Romania and Estonia.

The deployment is one of several planned by the Pentagon. Next month it is planning to send six F-15s to Finland, which is not a NATO member, but an active participant in many of the bloc’s activities.

Iceland is the only NATO member that has no military of its own, although it has a small coast guard force. The country used to host a US airbase during the Cold War, but it was shut down in 2006. Two years later US warplanes started paroling Iceland’s airspace.

The US and NATO are pushing for a stronger military presence in Europe, and particularly in Eastern Europe and the Baltic, close to Russia’s border. They argue that such deployment is necessary to deter Russia from military aggression.

Moscow says Western hawks are simply using the perceived Russian threat to justify greater military spending.

Austria to deploy troops at Alpine border to stop refugees coming through Italy — RT News

Quote start —

Austria is concerned that it may soon face an inflow of refugees coming through Italy and is considering deploying troops to handle it. This comes as the EU’s refugee deal with Turkey is about to be enforced.

In February, Austria introduced border restrictions, as did the Balkan countries. It resulted in a sharp decline in the number of new arrivals in Germany, the primary destination of asylum seekers. In March, less than 5,000 refugees entered Germany from Austria, the German Interior Ministry reported on Saturday, compared to 38,570 in February and 64,700 in January.

However, with navigation in the Mediterranean Sea becoming less risky, the flow may soon switch from the Turkey-Greek route to the longer Libya-Italy one. Austrian officials are preparing for the contingency and may deploy troops at the border with Italy, Defense Minister Hans Peter Doskozil told news outlets on Saturday.

„As the EU’s external borders are not yet effectively protected, Austria will soon ramp up strict border controls. That means massive border controls at the Brenner (Pass), and with soldiers,“ Doskozil told the German daily Die Welt.

In a separate interview with the Austrian newspaper Oesterreich, he said the number of soldiers involved in border control would depend on the needs of the mission.

„From the state of Tyrol alone, there are three companies with 100 men each ready to deploy,“ Doskozil said. „If we need more forces for border protection, we’ll get them.“

The Austrian military could help with border protection, migrant registrations, the humanitarian effort and deportations, he said.

Doskozil earlier suggested using military force to strengthen the mission of the Frontex EU border agency, which is helping Greece tackle the refugees. Under the deal between Brussels and Ankara, Frontex must hire some 4,000 personnel, including judges, interpreters and border guards, who would process asylum applications and handle deportations to Turkey. The Austrian minister argued that military personnel could handle some of those jobs while recruitment of civilians is underway.

The deal, under which Turkey agreed to help curb the inflow of asylum seekers into Europe in exchange for financial and political pay-off from the EU, comes into effect on Monday. Critics say the deal is half-baked and gives the Europeans an incentive to turn a blind eye to human rights abuses committed by Turkey.

Refugees storm border fence in Macedonia, face tear gassing by police — RT News

Quote start —

Macedonian police used tear gas to disperse hundreds of refugees, who tried to storm the fence on the country’s border with Greece.

The crowd, frustrated with restrictions imposed on travel through the Balkans, tore down the metal gate with a pole before the tear gas was deployed, Reuters cited an eyewitness as reporting.

The confrontation in Idomeni, a small border community, follows a crush of asylum seekers who rushed toward the border after a rumor spread that the Macedonian authorities had opened the border for several hours. They were angered to find the rumor was not true and demanded to be let in.

At least 22,000 refugees have been stranded in Greece, the primary destination for people fleeing violence and economic hardship in the Middle East and North Africa. The clog was caused by other countries restricting access to refugees, who want to pass them on their way to wealthier North European countries.
